Jiryis Ballan is a Palestinian composer, Buzuq player, performer, and musical director. He completed his M.A. studies in the music composition program at SUNY Buffalo as a Fulbright Scholar, focusing on concert music and music for modern dance. Previously, he served as co-director of The Caravan Orchestra and Choir project, an intercultural orchestra of young Palestinian, Jewish, and German musicians based in Germany. Currently, Jiryis is a Ph.D. candidate in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology (ICIT) at the University of California, Irvine. He has received the Medici Scholarship and Grad Division fellowship for his research on transforming the soundscape of the buzuq towards a motion sensor virtual interface. Jiryis' interests in music include music for dance and electroacoustic intercultural music.
